Re: Best Clubs in the 80's in the Bay Area
Sat, September 11, 2004 - 10:15 AMSurprised no one has mentioned Echo Beach - that place ruled around 1984 or so. I think 1015 Folsom is there now.
Hey Quake - I thought I was the last one in town with one of those bumper stickers. I have one framed on my wall along with the first ever KQAK playlist (April 14, 1983). -

Mon, September 13, 2004 - 12:23 AMOh man! I'll post this picture of me on my 13th birthday (1983) wearing my new Quake t-shirt and holding up the Oingo Boingo "Nothing to Fear" lp I got, too. I actually was one of the morning callers that could call in and do a station ID. I remember being really nervous and Alex Bennett and Joe Regelski teasing me. :) -

Re: Best Clubs in the 80's in the Bay Area
Mon, October 4, 2004 - 7:37 AMIn Houston in the 80's, THE club for dancing was Numbers. Amazingly, it's still there! And the best live venue for punk / new wave acts was The Island. (used to sneak in when I was in high school ... ahh youth) -

Re: Best Clubs in the 80's in the Bay Area
Mon, October 4, 2004 - 6:46 PMOingo Boingo was my first concert - 1981 at the Old Waldorf in SF. I was 15. I was surprised at how many obnoxious, fist-pumping jocks were at the show, (total jock cliches, straight out of a John Hughes movie). Still, it was a great experience. -

Re: Best Clubs in the 80's in the Bay Area
Tue, October 5, 2004 - 12:10 PMYou caught the "Only a Lad" crowd. Unfortunately, I never had the privledge of seeing them in concert. They disbanded (no pun intended) when I was but a youngin'. I have Farewell on VHS...probably one of the best concert tapes I own. -

Re: Best Clubs in the 80's in the Bay Area
Wed, October 6, 2004 - 10:53 PMI noticed no one from SF mentioned Bimbo's which I believe is still one of the best venues in town. It rocked during the 70s, 80s, 90s and still does today. It's an old nightclub with a big stage, and lots of bars. Coming next month is Sinatra (Nancy), saw Arthur Lee and Love recently, and also Soundtrack Of Our Lives. When I was with The Tubes, we once did two sold-out shows a night for two consecutive weeks and we had almost as much as the audience. -

Re: Best Clubs in the 80's in the Bay Area
Wed, October 6, 2004 - 11:00 PMI love Bimbo's. I haven't been there for years (the Korla Pandit show, I think, or maybe it was Guided by Voices). Do they still have the girl in the fishbowl? -
-
Re: Best Clubs in the 80's in the Bay Area
Thu, October 7, 2004 - 1:10 AMDavid, come check out Bimbo's next month when Nancy Sinatra's in the house. She has a damn good show. Caught it last year and her drummer was Clem Burke. The band was tighter than a drunken miser. Can't recall if there's a fishbowl, still. But the drinks are fishbowl size. -

Re: Best Clubs in the 80's in the Bay Area
Thu, October 7, 2004 - 2:54 PMI like Bimbo's. Some of the good shows I've seen there in the last couple of years include: Mogwai, Clinic, Tindersticks, Tortoise and Supergrass. -

Re: Best Clubs in the 80's in the Bay Area
Thu, October 7, 2004 - 3:39 PMBetween Bimbo's (like once every two or three months), Great American Music Hall and Cafe Du Nord, the Bay Area can catch some damn good acts. Fillmore is a bit more mainstream, but occassionally comes up with an exceptional show. But, overall, not enough clubs ... everything is so chichi or hippity-hoppity. Guess that's because Bay Area musical tastes, generally speaking, has become fairly dismal.
However ...
although it's an accoustic set, coming up Oct. 23-24 is Neil Young, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Paul McCartney (yes, Beatle Paul) and the INCREDIBLE Tegan & Sara ... all performing on ONE stage!!!
It's not a club, but it's one helluva show.

Re: Best Clubs in the 80's in the Bay Area
Thu, October 7, 2004 - 3:44 PMI'll have to try and come down for that Nancy Sinatra show!
I got to see Nick Lowe at Great American Music Hall last week. A splendid performance. -

Re: Best Clubs in the 80's in the Bay Area
Thu, October 7, 2004 - 6:52 PMGAMH is a bit funky (especially the dressing rooms) but it sounds good, and performers seem to like it. (Lousy drinks, though.) Maybe it's because it's right next door to the O'Farrell Theater???
