2. Orange Juice - Scottish band featuring Edwyn Collins (he had that solo hit: "A Girl Like You' a few years ago). Their first album "Can't Hide Your Love Forever" is fab.

3. Dolly Mixture - All-girl sort of twi-post-punk UK band. Rough but sweet.

4. Fun Boy Three - Most people know their song "Our Lips Are Sealed" (made famous by the Go-Gos) but their two full length albums are swell.

5. The Names - These guys were kind of the Belgian Joy Division - they got pretty experimental with dischordant guitar sounds n stuff.

Bonus: Mathematiques Modernes - Either French or Belgian duo who had this fantastic single called "Rough-Disco" (which Stereolab "borrowed" from on one of the songs on "Emperor Tomato Ketchup")

Also on tap will be a few old-school analog headbangers that haven't been heard since the early 80s."
I'm partial to the video for "Electric Dreams" by Giorgio Morodor and Philip Oakey, the video for "Money For Nothing" by Dire Straights, and of course "Video Killed..." by the Buggles.

So lately I've been collecting Information Society's back catalog and I've finally topped off the set with 1997's Don't Be Afraid.

What a weird, weird album.

It seems like the new wave acts that didn't just implode went in one of two directions. Either they went into electronic dance music (boy New Order was into acid house, weren't they?) or they went all industrial (seems to be working well for Gary Numan).

And then there's Information Society, who did both. Peace & Love, Inc. doesn't even pay lip service to guitars or anything, it's just electronic dance music. Then the band effectively broke up, except the frontman made a new album with Seibold (from the industrial band Hate Department) producing, and it's this brooding industrial thing, full of heavy guitars and horror movie samples.

I'm kind of confused.

Have any of you listened to this? What are your thoughts?

Usually when I write for my newspaper (The Jerusalem Post ) it's on sport, but I wrote this ahead of tonight's Sting concert in Tel Aviv. It's a personal account of what great music means.
++++++++++

Over the last few days, the first question I've asked my wife upon getting home was, "Any luck getting Sting tickets yet?" Each time the answer is, "No, I just can't get through on the phone to the booking agencies." I eventually discovered that we could book tickets online at Hadran.co.il, at which point the conversation switched to "how many tickets we should get?"

Suddenly, it's a case of "You want to blow around a thousand shekels [of money we don't have] on some pop star who lives in a mansion?" My wife demands that I explain why it's so important for me to see him, and to drag half the family along. The clear implication is that this "need to see Sting" is just another part of my continuing mid-life crisis that will leave the family destitute.

The fact is that Sting and I go back a long way. Back in my wild student days, when Sting was lead singer of The Police, I went to one of his first-ever official gigs at a residence hall at Birmingham University. It was the spring of 1977 and they were playing as an unknown support band to a punkette called Cherry Vanilla. Along with some friends I queued for over an hour to get into the concert, but only a handful made it in.

The rest of us were turned away, although a couple of brave souls who were less inebriated clambered up a steep drainpipe to get into the building.

The next morning the campus was alive with the news that The Police had just blown everyone away, and that they were destined for greatness. Even though this was the heyday of "new wave" with bands coming and going every week, the first-hand reports from my mates confirmed that this was a concert I should not have missed.

A few months later the Police broke into the big time with the release of "Roxanne" and "So Lonely," and the rest, as they say, is history. As a band the Police were the soundtrack to my student years. Along with Blondie, theirs were the songs that would get everyone rushing to the dance floor. One of the first dances I had with my wife was to "De do do do, Da da da da." In short, this was the music I fell in love to, and is saturated with great memories.

I finally got to see the Police live for the first time in London towards the end of their 1983 Synchronicity tour. By that time the band was on top of the world, reaching heights of popularity previously scaled only by the Beatles. The concert was not one of the best, and rumors were that the three-man band was suffering from internal strife. The Police later disbanded with Sting bouncing back in 1985 with the release of the enigmatic Dream of the Blue Turtles and an inspiring live double album, Bring on the Night. For many, Sting's new jazz-tinged music eclipsed even the finest offerings of The Police. In particular the haunting song "Russians" and its accompanying video captured the essence of the times, and for many people growing up during the Reagan years, brought a sense of hope that the dividing wall between East and West could be broken. Rename the song "Iranians" and you just might believe that there is some hope for Israel's relationship with Iran.

The next time I saw Sting was in the summer of '88 at a special Amnesty International concert at Wembley Stadium. My expectations for Sting were quite low, particularly with him appearing together with my all-time favorite musician, Bruce Springsteen. But on this occasion Sting simply outplayed the Boss with an incredibly powerful set. My wife Judie and I went to the concert with our best friends from the UK, just a few months before we left London to live in Israel. The show marked part of our separation from our life in England, as we knew the chances of seeing stars of this level in Israel were remote to say the least.

Sting's subsequent releases were regularly played at home and in the car. The most poignant moment of all came when "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" came on the car radio while I drove Judie to the hospital to give birth to our baby daughter, Eden.

Imagine our delight when in the wake of the "peace wave" Sting landed on these shores to play two dreamlike sets in September 1994. We managed to get tickets to both shows - the first in Sultan's Pool with some of the new friends we had made since turning Israeli. The resulting mixture of exotic venue and Sting's fine band was one of the best concerts I have witnessed. The second concert was in a small park on the edge of Rishon Lezion - an unlikely stage for one of the world's premier acts.

In the 12 years that have passed since those shows, the grooves in our Sting records have become even more worn, providing an aural backdrop as our kids have grown up.

The power of great music, the music that moves you, whether it is Sting, Black Eyed Peas or Mozart, is that it accompanies you through life, and weaves its way into your heart, your friendships, and your soul.

For me and thousands of others, tonight's concert with Sting is a date that brings to mind some of life's best moments. It's worth selling the family jewels to share that experience with the ones you love.

The other day I was listening to Ofra Haza (off the 'Just Say Sire' collection), and I mentioned to my wife that I'd love to hear more music like that... Middle Eastern or maybe Indian vocals over new wave/dance beats. I really liked the music in the opening credits of 'Ghost World', "Jaan Pehechaan Ho" by Mohammed Rafi... but that's male vocals and it's really more like a mid-70's feel (but you can't deny how cool it is, especially with the whole dance number).

I get the impression that there's a wealth of music I might enjoy if I knew where to look. Any suggestions?

In the last 4, 5 years, electro in the dance music scene has got lots of elements of music in it. Kraftwerk elements, house elements, funk elements, punk elements, rock elements, and so on... which is very similar to new wave scene in the '80s time.
Its very interesting and innovating scene at the moment. Mad Skippers would like to try to express the new sound from Tokyo as this new wave concept for the future. For all of us looking for that one groundbreaking collection of funky, electro classic this year, look no further.
The much anticipated pioneering compilation from the cutting-edge techno/electro label Madskippers from Tokyo Japan will make way to drop the ball on the end of October 2005.
Under the keen scrutiny of world-renowned DJ and producer Numanoid a.k.a. DJ Tsuyoshi, a perfect set of tracks were selected from artists that are known worldwide in the electronic scene and the rest that we'll soon to see explode from the label.
In a landscape filled with compilations in the widely expanding electro scene, this jewel of a selection takes a stab at what will soon be considered to many as 'Alt. Electro": new, catchy, and alternative sounds that will propel the world into an exciting age of a new genre. We shall expect no less from Madskippers.

The Gun Club after creatinga hellacious din throughout the eighties onstage & labels like Slash, Animal & New Rose played their final show in December of 1995, and ... i bet you missed it.

But for one night only,This Friday in SF, you can at least hear some of the music that still makes them mighty memorable & even vital to this day...

Here's mt A$$hole pal Mr. Parker Gibbsto officially invite to you to attend:

As we all know, tributes usually suck major ass, unless they are tributes to hair metal bands, because, quite frankly, how can you fuck up something
that's already beyond retarded? This tribute, however, offers to be
memorable because of the talent involved and the love these people have for
one of this generation's most unheralded bands.

Jeffrey Lee pierce died ten years ago in a hot air ballooning accident over
the NAPA valley after leaving a corporate fund raiser for PETA. His balloon
was never found. Or he died alone and penniless after kidney failure from
hepatitis C. I can't really remember. All I know is I saw him at the I-Beam
back in the day (probably top five shows EVER) and it's shame that he is
dead.

Friday will be a celebration of the man, his band, and some of the best
talent in SF (see flier; I'm really not into giving any personal shout outs
for many reasons). There will be drink specials (order the Jack On Fire!, or
the Sex on the Beat!) and I'm pretty sure that there will be wine and hot
air balloon safety demonstrations. I'll be drunk. Audra will be mad. And
there is bound to be nudity.

Hope to see you all there, and if not, then come to the show and have the
balls to tell me to my face why you wouldn't want to attend.

Annie's Social Club - 5th & Folsom - San Francisco CA

for mp3'z etc and a lengthier look at the Gun Club, check out http://blog.eventmagic.com

VH1 Classic will present a full hour of the English and German music videos for the 1984 hit "99 Luftballons," aka "99 Red Balloons," by German rock group Nena.

The music video presentation, to air Sunday (2 p.m. EST), caps off the cable channel's "Pay to Play for Hurricane Katrina Relief," which raised over $200,000 for Mercy Corps, a humanitarian relief organization.

Viewers could request one video to be played on VH1 Classic for every $25 donation. For a $35,000 donation, they could select an hour's worth of music videos from the 1960s through the early 1990s.

However, one viewer chose something different for his allotted hour, requesting continuous playing of "99 Luftballons," said VH1 spokeswoman Maura Wozniak.

"99 Luftballons" is a Cold-War era protest song that tells the story of 99 red balloons floating into the air, triggering an apocalypse when the military sends planes to intercept them.

Club GOSSIP is a once a month 80s new wave video party every first Saturday of the month. It is the only club in the Bay Area that you can dance along with/to your favorite 80s videos. One room is devoted entirely to videos that accompany the 80s hits as you used to see them on MTV a long long time ago. With two huge video screens and an inexhaustible and totally awesome library of the authentic 80's videos, Club Gossip is quickly becoming one of the more prominent parties.

Each month is dedicated to a memorable 80s figure or party theme of some sort. Examples of past tributes are Madonna, Smiths/Morrissey, Prince, Soft Cell and George Michael, with a future tribute to Ian Curtis and Joy Division in the month of May. When featuring an artist, they play more than the usual amount of songs by that artist, but do not bore the whole party with nothing but the featured artist. A Video Montage courtesy of Channel One Video adds to the ambiance of the theme in the front room.

Club Gossip was started by Randy (of Rocket) and Damon (of Bondage-a-Go-Go and 1984). They wanted to create a party that did something new and fun that everyone could enjoy. They strive every month to provide their clientele with a wide range of rotating guest star DJ's, like– Gina Shock (of the Go-Go's), Low Life (New Wave City), Nako (Popscene and Shutter), and Omar (Leisure and Shutter) so the playlist never gets stale or tired. The resident DJ's, Damon, Melting Girl (Death Guild and 1984), and Shon (Rocket) play their favorite 80's New Wave music in a unpretentious manor all the while keeping the dancefloor plenty busy.

The Cat Club hosts this party every first Saturday of the month. There are two rooms of dancing, two full bars, and a smoking area. In addition, there are monthly drink specials. The “clientele” ranges from gay, straight, bi, and tranny. The party is not geared to anyone specific, just for everyone to enjoy. The rooms fill up fairly quickly, we think being free before 10pm has something to do with that, yet the crowd is so congenial that you can easily maneuver through the crowd, people are pretty kind and respectful at Club GOSSIP.

The March 4 Club GOSSIP, the General Manager of Cat Club, Randy, will be celebrating 2nd 30th birthday. Full disclosure, he like to get crazy on his birthday, so watch out.

Saturday March 4th Club Gossip presents: ICONS

Tribute 2:
Erasure/Bronski Beat/Morrissey /Queen/Judas Priest/
George Michael/Boy George
Paying homage to the queer artists of the 80’s

VJ's Damon, Tim & Shon
DJ's Melting Girl and Special Guest Omar

Tired of watching VH1 I love the 80’s, come and experience it!

Has anyone here seen The Tomorrow Show - Punk & New Wave, recently released on DVD? Just saw part of the first disc with the "round table discussion" on the emergence of punk with Bill Graham, Kim Fowley and Robert Hilburn. Pretty funny to hear the early propaganda hype about punk, and Graham talking about people wearing swastikas and being into "urination". It's pretty obvious he hadn't actually witnessed any real punk rock/new wave before. It just reminds me of how much the media can skew things way beyond reality.

Looking forward to watching the rest of the discs...
